This mural was created by Sheefy McFly, a native Detroiter, rapper and visual artist in 2018. That year was filled with talk of the “resurgence” of Detroit, with the influx of trendy restaurants and a blossoming urban scene. The white flight back to the downtown area, hipsters and chain stores popping up everywhere. However, for those who have always lived here, their communities and perseverance seem to be left out of this narrative. I love this mural for its emphasis on the broadness of the city, how its people have been there through the 1967 riots, the 2013 bankruptcy and everything else thrown their way. The murals bright colors and ode to the artistic style of Keith Haring encompass the feel of the positive energy that exudes from the city. The culture and community is something to be aware of, one that Detroiters are proud of. Detroit is a city of strength and opportunity and it has never been anything less.
